Realistic, slang-filled dialogue and short, crisp narrative passages create a minimalist world of frenetic gang warfare, substance abuse, and wild parties that become nightmares.” School Library Journal writes, “Coburn's brief sentences and often-raw gang slang create a cadence and reflect the movement of the novel through four suspenseful days.” Booklist writes, “The staccato rhythm of Coburn's prose is the best part of this tale of Manhattan prep-school gangsters. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, it is Jake’s unique writing style that has captured reviewers. While Prep has drawn critical comparisons to S.E. Prep was named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults and a Junior Library Guild selection, and is currently being made into a movie by Paramount-MTV Films and Benderspink. Jake’s first novel, Prep (Dutton, 2003), is based on his teenage years, where he witnessed New York’s privileged offspring form some of the city’s most vicious street gangs. In 2000, he graduated from Brown University magna cum laude with a degree in Modern Culture and Media. He grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and attended several different prep schools. Jake Coburn was born in New York City in 1978. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Matter of Trust by Jeff ErnoFirstly, Jeremy is presented as being in some way dishonest because he hadn't told Travis until three months into their relationship that he already had sex with another guy. However, it doesn't do this in entirely a value-free way. In terms of its message, the story does get the point across about the value of safe sex. The portrayal of his competing hopes and doubts seemed realistic to me. I also wanted to see what the author, Jeff Erno, was like as some of his longer works seem interesting.įrom the point of view of the narrative, I liked the gradual development of the boys' relationship in the story as well as the protagonist's introspection about his sexual orientation and his attractions. I was interested in reading this story because it belongs to The Real Story: Safe Sex Project, which essentially aims to educate young adults about safe sex without making it seem like a school lesson, and I wondered how successful it would be in doing that. Zaira is now faced with a choice: stay and remain a farmer, or take on her father’s role as commander of The Liliana. The two of them having traveled to inform her of this fact and that she is the sole beneficiary of Theo’s will, having inherited the farm as well as her father’s most prized possession: an airship! Both of these individuals having known her father well, informing Zaira that Theo von Monocle was something of a war hero in Rislandia, having undertaken many secret missions for the crown against the Iron Empire, and that after two years he has finally been declared legally dead after disappearing on one of said missions. But things are about to change!Ī pair of strangers appear at Zaira’s farm driving a new-fangled steamcar. While she struggles with all her responsibilities, Zaira gives it her best, holding things together as best she can with the help of her neighbor James and his parents. Sixteen-year-old Zaira von Monocle is a country girl who has been living alone, tending her family farm ever since her mother died and her father disappeared over two years ago. It is a light, fast-paced, and action-packed adventure which delivers hours of fun! For Steam and Country is a young adult, steampunk adventure penned by Jon Del Arroz. He does so because he ascribes to women only a limited form of practical rationality. Plato’s views on the worth of women change, if not with time, then with context.Aristotle throughout supports the traditional view on the exclusion of women from politics and public life. In the Timaeus, women are treated not only as the weaker but also as the decadent form of humankind in the cycle of births and rebirths. Because these conditions no longer obtain in the “second-best state” designed in the Laws, women are assigned, there, a much inferior role. Plato’s principle of equality is, however, limited to the women of the upper classes in the Republic, and it is, at least in part, a consequence of the separation of the classes. This is due to the fact that he acknowledges, in the Republic, the possibility that women possess abilities that are equal to those of men and therefore assigns to them the same functions in the state. Plato is commonly credited with a much more enlightened view concerning the equality of women and their political rights than Aristotle. 7/5/2023 0 Comments A river runs through it bookIf you love fishing (even if you’re terrible) and love A River Runs through It, then you’ll love this list A River Runs through It’s Southwest Montana places: I much prefer spending my time tramping through the willows, falling into creeks and eating sandwiches to perfecting a cast that achieves the perfect unity of theology and art, but that’s just me. Unfortunately, my outdoorsmanship evokes more Patrick MacManus (who once said his casting technique has “the exact same motions as those of an old lady fighting off a bee with a broom handle”) than Maclean. Whenever I read A River Runs through It, I get the urge to scurry into the woods and maybe try my hand at fly-fishing. So it only makes sense that I would write another post about the greatest of fishing books: A River Runs through It. Southwest Montana’s creeks and streams open for general fishing this Saturday, May 17th. Hamilton uses is “shapeshifter.” I say “90% sure” because I’m not really sure, but I also can’t be arsed to look it up, even though the book is literally three inches away from my knee right now.) And Jean-Claude has always lurrved Anita, even though she’s a vampire hunter and he’s - well, a vampire. (I keep wanting to call him a werewolf, but I’m 90% sure the term Ms. See, Anita thought she was falling in love with Richard a couple of books ago - even after she found out he was a shapeshifter. Why is she dating both of them? Because Jean-Claude is making her. Anita returned from Branson, Missouri (at the conclusion of Bloody Bones), and she is continuing to date both Richard the Shapeshifter and Jean-Claude the Master Vampire. Hamilton is starting to turn her corner into supernatural erotica, and I am not looking forward to the journey down that road. I can officially say: With The Killing Dance, Ms. So – into the fray I must go.īecause seriously – I am starting to wonder why I continue to read this series. But my backlog is starting to push double digits, and that’s a thing that cannot stand. I have had this draft saved in my draft folder for approximately ten days. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Inherent vice author“With whip-smart, psychedelic-bright language, Pynchon manages to convey the Sixties-except the Sixties were never really like this. the author's comical mystery (musings about the end of national innocence) as well as the wordplay so relentlessly present in any of his books, keep Pynchon's Inherent Vice from being just another thriller-and ensure it is never less than entertaining.” - The Denver Post I found myself charmed and pleased with the way Pynchon meets the genre square and fair, on its own terms, and makes it his own.” - San Fransisco Chronicle that most Pynchon fans will be delighted by.
